Species-specific growth promotion of Astragalus species on soil contaminated with lead is observed in both in vitro and in vivo systems. Astragalus species are shown to exhibit a growth promoting effect on contaminated soils, which is dose-dependent and species-specific. Lead is bound to the microbial cells of Astragalus species and the adsorbed fraction may enhance cell growth. Available studies suggest that sorption of soil lead by Astragalus roots appears to be dose-dependent. The mechanisms of this species-specific growth promotion on soil contaminated with lead may be due to the varying abilities of different Astragalus species to adsorb lead to the roots and to the extraradical, rhizosphere area, as well as their different capacities to increase metal-microbial interactions. The species-specific growth-promoting mechanisms of Astragalus species on contaminated soils are also discussed in terms of the relationships between cadmium and lead.Giant Arctic Sea Ice Reduction Discovered by NASA's Ice Satellite
Are Arctic regions among Earth's most vulnerable to climate change? According to a new NASA study, they are. The satellite confirmed the massive Arctic sea ice reduction seen in 1979 and 1983, before much of the scientific community believed it could happen.

The large and persistent sea ice ridge has been observed in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas this March, where temperatures are a few degrees above average. The temperature in the Beaufort Sea area during the last week of March was 7.4 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius) higher than normal. This indicates that warm ocean water has penetrated far inland from the surface.
